  • THE HISTORY OF TRUFFLES
It is common knowledge that truffles were already known around 1600 B.C. among many civilizations. From the Sumerians, Chinese and Babylonians to the Egyptians, Greeks and Ancient Romans. These ''weird mushrooms'' had many different names throughout history. The Arabs named it ramek, tomer or kemas, the Greek idra, the Romans first called it tuber (from tumere – swollen, round) and then tartufo. The French call it truffe, the British truffle, and the Germans call it truffel. Whatever name they had, truffles have a rich history, divided primarily between culinary art, culture & literature. This mysterious fruit had also inspired many poets. It was mentioned even by Shakespeare but became widely known after the publishing of Molière’s comedy Tartuffe. Even Mozart himself enjoyed its fragrance. Truffles have always been considered something special in culinary history. Gastronomists worshipped them as the food of the Gods that inspires the soul and enlivens the body. ‘’ The first wild truffles in Slovenian Istria were discovered at the beginning of the 18th century. Afterwards the truffle become an indispensable luxury ingredient deeply connected with our culinary culture’’
  • WHAT ARE TRUFFLES?

A feature of truffles is that they grow near the roots of certain species of trees with which they grow in symbiosis. Truffles grow from spores – very small seeds that have remained from a previous truffle growing in the same spot or were transferred by some animals that feed on them.
